About 11+ Verbal Reasoning
Verbal Reasoning tests how well a child works with words, letters and logic. It is not taught in primary school, so most children meet the question types for the first time during 11+ preparation. That makes it the area where preparation often changes results most.
Question types vary by test. GL Assessment papers usually have clearly named question types such as letter codes, word links and analogies. CEM-style papers mix vocabulary, comprehension, and logic more freely, so children need to switch quickly between tasks.
Speed is crucial. Papers have many questions and short time limits, so children need both the method and the confidence to move on. Tutors teach strategies, then build pace gradually.
Exam boardsGL Assessment (named question types) and CEM-style (mixed question types) papers, depending on the region or school.

11+ Verbal Reasoning tutoring questions
What is Verbal Reasoning?
It is a set of puzzles using words, letters and logic. It tests vocabulary, flexible thinking and speed. Children are not usually taught it at school, so practice makes a real difference.
Can children improve at Verbal Reasoning?
Yes. Most question types follow patterns that can be learned. Children also grow stronger through reading and vocabulary building, which help with many questions.
Is Verbal Reasoning needed for every 11+?
No. Whether it is tested depends on the area and school. Some tests drop it, some include it as a main section. Check with each school before planning lessons.
How early can my child start?
Many children start in Year 4 or Year 5 with gentle introductions to question types and vocabulary. Heavier timed practice usually comes closer to the exam.
Does it help to buy practice books?
A few can help for extra practice, but the key is choosing papers in the style of your schools’ tests. Your tutor can recommend what to use and set homework from it.
