About 11+

The 11+ is an entrance exam taken in Year 6 for places at selective grammar schools and many independent schools. It is not national. Each region, county or school sets its own rules, so the first job is finding out exactly what your target schools ask for.

Papers usually draw on four areas: Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Many are produced by GL Assessment, others by CEM-style providers, and some schools write their own. The format, timing and mix of subjects differ, and so does the type of question. Some schools also set a piece of creative writing.

Most tests are taken in September of Year 6, so serious preparation often starts in Year 4 or 5. Registration deadlines come even earlier. Our tutors cover the content, teach exam technique and build the speed that these timed papers demand.

11+ tutoring questions

When should we start 11+ tutoring?

Many families start in Year 4 or early Year 5, which allows time to fill gaps and practise steadily before the tests in September of Year 6. Starting later is possible, but there is less time to build speed.

What is the difference between GL Assessment and CEM-style papers?

GL papers tend to have separate, clearly labelled subject sections. CEM-style papers usually mix question types and are more varied and less predictable. We ask which your schools use and match practice to it.

Does the 11+ vary by area?

Yes. Some areas run a shared test for all grammar schools, others have school by school tests, and independent schools often set their own papers. Always check each school’s admissions page for the current format.

Do you tutor for independent school entrance too?

Yes. Independent schools often test Maths and English, sometimes alongside reasoning, and may include interviews or writing tasks. A tutor can prepare your child for the content and the style.

Which 11+ subjects can you cover?

Maths, English, Verbal Reasoning and Non-Verbal Reasoning. Most families choose the subjects their target schools test, and some begin with the area where their child is weakest.
