About 11+ Maths

The 11+ Maths paper is based on the KS2 National Curriculum, but questions are often harder and more varied than classroom work. Children meet multi-step problems, unfamiliar wording and topics from Year 6 that school may not have taught yet when the test arrives.

Some tests are multiple choice, others need written answers. Some allow no calculator at all. Time is tight, so accuracy and speed matter equally. A child who knows the method but works slowly will still lose marks.

Maths is also the section where preparation helps most. Because it is content-based, a tutor can plan the topics in order, check for gaps and then move to timed practice closer to the test date.

Exam boardsGL Assessment, CEM-style and school-set papers, usually based on the KS2 curriculum, taken in Year 6.

11+ Maths tutoring questions

Is 11+ Maths harder than SATs Maths?

It covers similar content but is usually more demanding, with trickier wording and less predictable questions. A child comfortable with SATs may still need practice at the 11+ style and speed.

Can my child sit the 11+ if they have not covered Year 6 topics?

Yes. The test is usually in September, so some Year 6 content has not been taught yet. A tutor can teach those topics in advance so nothing is new on the day.

Will a tutor use real past papers?

Tutors use practice papers in the style of the test your child will sit. Because papers vary, we ask which provider and format your schools use before choosing materials.

How often should we have 11+ Maths lessons?

One 50-minute lesson a week suits most families, with homework in between. Some add a second lesson in the last few weeks before the test.
