About KS3 Maths
KS3 Maths follows the National Curriculum across six areas: number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability and statistics. Year 7 revisits primary topics such as fractions and place value, then pushes them further. By Year 9, pupils are working with equations, Pythagoras and early trigonometry.
Maths is almost always set, so a pupil who stumbles on fractions or negative numbers in Year 7 can end up in a lower set where the pace and ceiling are lower. Many children also meet algebra for the first time and find the letters hard to trust.
The topics learned here are the exact foundations of GCSE Maths. Weak fractions, percentages or equation solving in Year 9 show up as lost marks in Year 11, so this is a good time to make them secure.
What we cover
Place value and number
Negative numbers, decimals, factors, multiples, primes and the order of operations.
Fractions, decimals and percentages
Calculating with fractions, converting between forms and percentage change.
Algebra
Simplifying expressions, substituting, solving linear equations and working with sequences.
Ratio and proportion
Sharing in a ratio, scale, unit rates and direct proportion.
Geometry and measures
Angles, area and perimeter, volume, constructions, transformations and Pythagoras.
Graphs
Coordinates, straight-line graphs, gradients and real-life graphs.
Probability and statistics
Probability scales, listing outcomes, averages, charts and comparing data sets.
How a Nerdely KS3 Maths tutor helps
Finds the real gaps
Early lessons check which primary and Year 7 topics are still shaky, so time goes where it counts.
Makes algebra make sense
Concrete examples and plenty of practice help children trust letters as numbers.
Prepares for school tests
Practice for end-of-term tests and set placement, using the topics your child has actually covered.
Keeps you in the loop
Homework, quick quizzes and a short weekly test, with scores and notes in your account.

KS3 Maths tutoring questions
My child is in a lower set. Can tutoring help them move up?
It often can. We help close the gaps behind the set placement and build confidence with the topics being tested. Move-up decisions are made by the school, but stronger test results give them a good reason to look again.
What if my child struggles with fractions?
Fractions are the most common weak spot, and they sit underneath algebra, ratio and probability. A tutor can go back to the basics with visual methods, then build back up to the Year 8 and 9 work.
When should we start before GCSE?
Year 8 or 9 is a sensible time. That leaves time to fix gaps without exam pressure, and Year 10 starts on solid ground.
Can a tutor stretch a pupil who is already doing well?
Yes. We can move on to harder problem solving, early GCSE topics or enrichment such as maths challenges, as long as the core Year 7 to 9 content stays secure.
How long are lessons?
Each lesson is 50 minutes, live and one to one. Most pupils have one lesson a week.
