About KS3 Science

KS3 Science covers biology, chemistry and physics in roughly equal parts, taught by one or more teachers depending on the school. Pupils also learn to work scientifically: planning fair tests, handling variables, spotting patterns in data and judging how reliable results are.

Year 7 and 8 introduce big ideas such as cells, particles, forces, energy and reactions. Year 9 then goes further, and many schools start parts of GCSE content here. Pupils who have not grasped particles or forces early find the later work hard to follow.

Science at this level mixes recall with explanation and maths. Children have to remember key words, use formulae and read graphs and tables. A tutor can show how these connect, which pays off at GCSE, where all three sciences lean on the same skills.

What we cover

Cells and organisms

Cell structure, tissues, organs, and the main body systems.

Genes and ecosystems

Inheritance, variation, food chains, photosynthesis and adaptation.

Particles and matter

States of matter, atoms, elements and the particle model.

Chemical reactions

Acids and alkalis, reactivity, the periodic table and word equations.

Forces and motion

Speed, gravity, pressure, balanced and unbalanced forces.

Energy and waves

Energy stores, heating and cooling, light and sound.

Electricity and magnetism

Circuits, current and voltage, magnets and electromagnets.

Working scientifically

Variables, fair tests, drawing graphs and evaluating results.

How a Nerdely KS3 Science tutor helps

Explains the ideas, not just the facts

Diagrams and everyday examples help the particle model and energy ideas make sense.

Strengthens the maths in science

Rearranging formulae, units and graph reading, which hold many pupils back.

Prepares for school tests

Practice on the units your child is studying, with questions that mix recall and explanation.

Keeps you in the loop

Homework, quick quizzes and a short weekly test, with scores and notes in your account.

How Nerdely works

  1. Tell us what your child needs

Subject, level, exam board and the times that suit you. It takes a couple of minutes.

  2. We find and interview a tutor

We shortlist tutors who teach that subject and level, interview them ourselves and match the right one.

  3. Lessons are booked in

Live, one-to-one, 50-minute lessons in our online classroom, with video, chat and a shared whiteboard.

  4. You see the progress

Homework, quizzes and weekly test scores in your account, plus a short report every month.

KS3 Science tutoring questions

Will one tutor cover biology, chemistry and physics?

Often yes at KS3, since the content is at a shared level. If your child needs deeper help in one science, we can match a tutor who is stronger in it.

My child finds physics hard. What can help?

Physics leans on maths and abstract ideas. A tutor can slow down, use diagrams and examples, and practise the calculations until they feel familiar.

Does a tutor help with practical work?

Lessons are online, so we do not run experiments. We do teach the thinking behind practicals: variables, predictions, results tables, graphs and conclusions, which your child will be marked on.

How does this prepare for GCSE Science?

Year 9 topics such as particles, forces and cells are the base for GCSE Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Combined Science. Secure basics make the GCSE courses much easier to follow.
