About KS3 Computer Science
KS3 Computing covers computer science, information technology and digital literacy. The National Curriculum asks pupils to learn algorithms, work with at least two programming languages (one text-based, such as Python) and understand how data is stored and sent.
Schools vary a lot in what they teach and how deeply. Some pupils build programs from Year 7, while others spend a lot of time on office tools. That makes a tutor useful for filling in the programming gaps before choosing GCSE Computer Science.
The hardest part for most children is moving from block-based coding such as Scratch to typed code, where one wrong character breaks everything. Logical thinking, patience and lots of practice matter more than speed, and one-to-one help is a good way to build them.
What we cover
Algorithms
Writing, tracing and improving step-by-step solutions, with flowcharts and pseudocode.
Programming in Python
Variables, input and output, selection, loops and simple functions.
Block-based coding
Scratch-style projects that build logic before moving to typed code.
Data representation
Binary, how text and images are stored, and why computers use bits.
Computer systems
Inputs, processors, memory, storage and how they work together.
Networks and the internet
How data travels, what the web is, and how devices connect.
Staying safe online
Passwords, privacy, scams and responsible use of technology.
How a Nerdely KS3 Computer Science tutor helps
Builds real programming habits
Planning, writing, testing and debugging code, with the tutor guiding rather than doing it for them.
Moves from blocks to text
Gentle steps from Scratch-style thinking to Python syntax and error messages.
Explains the theory simply
Binary and networks taught with examples and short questions.
Keeps you in the loop
Homework, quick quizzes and a short weekly test, with scores and notes in your account.
How Nerdely works
Tell us what your child needs
Subject, level, exam board and the times that suit you. It takes a couple of minutes.
We find and interview a tutor
We shortlist tutors who teach that subject and level, interview them ourselves and match the right one.
Lessons are booked in
Live, one-to-one, 50-minute lessons in our online classroom, with video, chat and a shared whiteboard.
You see the progress

KS3 Computer Science tutoring questions
Does my child need a special computer?
No. Any laptop or computer that can run our online classroom will do. If we use a coding tool, we choose one that runs in the browser or is free and simple to set up.
Will the tutor teach Python?
Yes, Python is the usual choice for text-based coding at KS3 and carries on into GCSE. We can follow the language your school uses if it is different.
Is KS3 Computing the same as ICT?
Not quite. Computing now has a stronger focus on programming and how computers work, alongside digital skills. A tutor can help with both, depending on what your child needs.
Is this useful if my child may not pick GCSE Computer Science?
Yes. Logical thinking, problem solving and safe use of technology help across school, and trying the subject properly makes the GCSE choice easier.
