About Primary

Primary school is split into Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) and Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6). Children follow the National Curriculum, with Maths and English at the centre. The basics learned here, such as number bonds, times tables, phonics and sentence structure, are what every later subject is built on.

There are a few fixed points along the way: the Year 1 phonics screening check, the Year 4 multiplication tables check, and the KS2 SATs in Year 6, where results are reported as scaled scores with 100 as the expected standard. Many children also prepare for 11+ or secondary school entry from Year 4 or 5.

Tutoring at this age works best when it feels encouraging and light. Our tutors keep lessons short on lecturing and long on doing, so a child who has lost confidence in a subject starts to enjoy it again.

Why families choose Nerdely for Primary

Matched to your child

We ask about their year group, strengths and worries, then match a tutor who is good with young children.

Short, lively lessons

Each lesson is 50 minutes, one to one, with a shared whiteboard for drawing, counting and writing together.

Every tutor interviewed

We talk to each tutor ourselves before they teach, and only match one when we are confident they fit.

Progress you can see

Homework, quick quizzes and a short weekly test appear in your account, with a short report every month.

Primary tutoring questions

Which primary subjects do you tutor?

Maths, English and Science, for children in Years 1 to 6. If your child needs help with something else, such as 11+ preparation, ask us and we will point you to the right tutor.

What age can my child start online tutoring?

Many children start in Year 1 or 2, usually for phonics, early reading or number confidence. Younger children do best with a patient tutor and a parent nearby for the first few lessons.

Will my child cope with an online lesson?

Most primary children take to it quickly. Lessons run in our own online classroom with video, chat and a shared whiteboard, and there is nothing to install. Your child just needs a laptop or tablet.

Do you help with Year 6 SATs?

Yes. Tutors can work through the KS2 Maths, reading, and grammar, punctuation and spelling content, and practise with past-style papers so your child knows what to expect.

How often should my child have lessons?

One 50-minute lesson a week is the usual starting point for each subject. Some families add a second lesson before SATs or an entrance exam.
