About Primary Science
Primary Science follows the National Curriculum across KS1 and KS2. Children study plants, animals and humans, everyday materials, seasonal change, then in KS2 move on to forces, light, sound, electricity, states of matter, evolution and inheritance.
Working scientifically runs through every topic. Children learn to ask questions, plan a fair test, make predictions, record results and draw conclusions. These skills are marked in class and carry on into secondary Science.
There is no national Science SATs for every child, so progress here relies on school assessments. A tutor can fill gaps, explain tricky ideas such as the water cycle or circuits, and prepare children well for Year 7 Science.
Exam boardsNational Curriculum KS1 and KS2, assessed by the school. Some children sit science sampling tests, and independent schools may include Science in entrance assessments.

How a Nerdely Primary Science tutor helps
Explains in plain words
Tricky ideas are broken down with pictures and examples from everyday life.
Practises working scientifically
Tutors help children plan fair tests, read tables and graphs, and explain results.
Builds vocabulary
Key words such as habitat, dissolve or reflect are practised until they are second nature.
Prepares for Year 7
Children arrive in secondary school knowing the basics of biology, chemistry and physics.

Primary Science tutoring questions
Is Science tutoring useful at primary age?
It can be, especially for children who enjoy asking why or who feel behind. It also builds vocabulary and confidence that make Year 7 Science much smoother.
Does my child need equipment at home?
Not much. Tutors use the shared whiteboard, diagrams and simple items from around the house if a demonstration helps. Nothing needs to be bought.
Does primary Science include exams?
Usually not national ones. Children are assessed by the school through the year. Some independent schools include Science in entrance assessments, and a tutor can prepare for that.
Can one tutor teach Maths and Science together?
Sometimes. Usually we match a tutor for each subject so your child gets someone who teaches it every week. Tell us what you need and we will suggest the best option.
