About KS3

Key Stage 3 covers Years 7, 8 and 9, from age 11 to 14. The move from primary to secondary is a big one: new teachers for every subject, more homework and a faster pace. Some children settle quickly. Others quietly fall behind in a subject before anyone notices.

There are no national exams at KS3. Progress is judged through school tests, end-of-year exams and teacher assessments, and many schools place pupils in sets or streams for Maths, English and Science. Where your child lands in a set can shape how they are taught for years, so strong Year 7 and 8 results matter.

Year 9 is when the foundations are tested. Pupils choose their GCSE options, and in many schools GCSE content starts early. A tutor can fill gaps from primary, stretch a child who is ready for more, and make the step up to GCSE feel far less steep.

Why families choose Nerdely for KS3

Fills the gaps early

Missed topics from primary or Year 7 are easier to fix now than in Year 10, when GCSE content moves quickly.

Extra practice helps a child hold their place in a top set, or earn a move up.

Helps with Year 9 option choices

Seeing how your child copes with a subject at a deeper level makes the GCSE choice easier.

KS3 tutoring questions

Which KS3 subjects do you tutor?

Maths, English, Science, Computer Science, History, Geography, French and Spanish. If you need a subject not listed, ask us and we will tell you what we can do.

Does my child need tutoring if they are doing fine at school?

Not always. Some families use a tutor to stretch a confident child, build study habits or get ahead before GCSE. Others wait until a worry appears. Either is fine.

Are there exams at KS3?

There are no national KS3 exams. Schools set their own tests and end-of-year exams, which often decide sets and shape GCSE option advice. A tutor can help your child prepare for these.

Can a tutor help with GCSE options in Year 9?

Yes. Working with your child shows which subjects they enjoy and cope with at a deeper level. That gives you real evidence to discuss with the school, alongside their advice.

How long are lessons, and how often?

Each lesson is 50 minutes, live and one to one in our online classroom. Most KS3 pupils have one lesson a week per subject.
