About A-Level

A-Levels are a two-year course taken in Years 12 and 13. In England they are linear: the final exams come at the end of Year 13 and count for all or nearly all of the grade, graded A* to E. Most students take three subjects, and mock results in Year 12 rarely tell the whole story.

Universities make offers in grades, such as AAB, and schools send UCAS a predicted grade for each subject in the autumn of Year 13. Strong Year 12 exams and early habits help predictions, so it is worth fixing weak spots before the application goes in.

The step up from GCSE is real. Papers are longer, questions ask for argument and judgement rather than recall, and independent study carries more of the load. Each board (AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas) sets its own papers, and some subjects add coursework, called NEA.

Why families choose Nerdely for A-Level

A specialist for each subject

We match a tutor who teaches your child’s exact specification, from OCR MEI Maths to AQA Psychology.

Built around the two-year course

Support runs alongside school lessons through Year 12 and Year 13, then steps up for mocks and the summer exams.

Interviewed for depth, not just grades

Our team interviews every tutor and checks they can explain A-Level content clearly, including the harder Year 13 material.

Evidence for predicted grades

Weekly tests, marked homework and a monthly report give you and your child a clear picture before predicted grades are set.

A-Level tutoring questions

Which A-Level subjects do you tutor?

Maths, Further Maths, English Literature, English Language, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, History, Geography, Economics, Psychology, Business, French and Spanish. If your subject is not listed, ask us.

When should my child start A-Level tutoring?

Early in Year 12 is ideal, because the jump from GCSE catches many students out and gaps compound over two years. Plenty of families start later, often before Year 12 mocks or ahead of Year 13 exams.

Do predicted grades matter?

Yes. Schools send predicted grades to UCAS with the application, and universities use them to decide offers. Strong results in Year 12 exams and Year 13 mocks give teachers evidence to support a higher prediction.

What about AS-Levels?

AS-Levels are now a separate qualification and do not count towards the A-Level grade. Some schools still enter students at the end of Year 12 for practice. Tutoring can cover AS content or the full A-Level.

How long are A-Level lessons?

Lessons last 50 minutes and run live in our online classroom, with a shared whiteboard for working through problems and essay plans. A weekly lesson per subject is typical, with extra sessions often added before mocks.
