About A-Level Geography

A-Level Geography mixes physical geography, human geography and an independent investigation worth about 20 percent of the grade. The written papers come at the end of Year 13 and use short answers, data response and extended essays. It is a subject where reading widely and keeping up with current events pays off.

Physical themes include water and carbon cycles, coasts, hazards and glaciers. Human themes include global systems, changing places, contemporary urban environments and population. Each board picks its own mix, and schools choose from options. We match tutors who can teach the options your child’s school has chosen, not just the common core.

Top grades go to students who give detailed case studies, handle data confidently and link ideas across topics. The investigation needs fieldwork, so planning ahead, collecting data and presenting it well all matter. A tutor can help students organise their notes into usable case study banks. A tutor can also help present results clearly, with sensible maps, graphs and statistical tests.

A-Level Geography tutoring questions

What fieldwork is needed?

Schools must provide a minimum number of days of fieldwork for A-Level Geography. Your child uses this data in the written papers and for the independent investigation. A tutor can help interpret data afterwards. Ask your school how many days are planned so the investigation can be scheduled well.

Is there lots of maths in Geography?

There is some statistics, such as Spearman’s rank and chi-squared tests, plus graph reading. A tutor helps students use these methods with confidence on both the papers and the investigation. Using real data from your own fieldwork is good practice.

How can I tell which options my child studies?

Ask the school or check the specification code. Options differ by board and by school, and we match a tutor who can teach the ones your child has chosen. It is best to ask early so the tutor can plan ahead.

Does Geography count as a science or an arts subject?

It sits between the two, which is why universities accept it for a wide range of courses. This also means tutoring needs both data skills and essay skills. We aim to build both together. Strong students combine both, which is why lessons practise data tasks and essays together.
