About A-Level Economics

A-Level Economics has no coursework. Everything is decided by exams at the end of Year 13, split between microeconomics, macroeconomics and a synoptic paper that mixes both. Papers include data response questions, short calculations and long essays. Students are graded A* to E on a wide mix of question types, so practice across all of them matters.

Students learn the models first: supply and demand, market failure, aggregate demand and supply, monetary and fiscal policy. The hard part is evaluation, where answers must weigh up policies, consider time scales and use up-to-date examples. Evaluation marks often separate a B from an A, so we treat it as a skill to practise weekly.

Maths matters more than many expect. Elasticity, multipliers and index numbers appear throughout, and data questions test whether students can interpret tables and graphs quickly. Weak number skills are among the most common reasons for lost marks. A tutor can build up this fluency through short, regular practice rather than occasional long sessions.

A-Level Economics tutoring questions

Do I need GCSE Economics?

No. Most students start A-Level Economics without having studied it before. A tutor can start from the basics and build up to the exam requirements. The syllabus assumes no prior knowledge, which puts everyone on a similar footing.

How important is Maths for Economics?

It matters. Elasticity, multipliers and graph reading come up often, and Economics degrees ask for strong Maths. A tutor can support the quantitative side of the course. It is good practice to revise Maths alongside Economics.

How do I improve my essays?

Plan with a clear chain of reasoning, use the correct diagram, give an example and evaluate. A tutor gives feedback on written essays so your child sees where marks are lost. Feedback on the next essay shows whether the changes are working.

Does the board make a difference?

The core theory is the same, but papers and unit layouts differ. Edexcel has two versions, for example. We ask which your child follows and match a tutor accordingly. Note that exam board names matter when choosing practice papers.
