About A-Level Psychology
A-Level Psychology is assessed by exams at the end of Year 13, with no coursework. Papers cover core areas such as social influence, memory, attachment, approaches, psychopathology and biopsychology, plus a choice of applied topics like schizophrenia, forensic psychology or relationships. Because every area carries marks, gaps in one topic cannot easily be covered by strengths in another.
Students must know many studies in detail, but marks come from evaluating them: strengths, limitations, methodology and ethical issues. Extended answers, often 16 marks, ask for a balanced argument with a clear conclusion. A tutor can help students shape their knowledge into the format examiners look for. This means learning evaluation points alongside every study, rather than leaving them until revision.
Research methods and maths are a large part of the course. Students design studies, choose tests, work with data and draw conclusions, so they need to be comfortable with numbers as well as essays. Students who find it difficult early on often improve quickly with guided practice. Over time, repeated research methods practice makes the quantitative questions far less daunting.

A-Level Psychology tutoring questions
Is A-Level Psychology a science or an essay subject?
Both. Students write long essays, and a good proportion of marks come from research methods and maths. Universities treat Psychology as a science subject for many courses. Choosing it alongside Biology or Maths is common for students aiming at science degrees.
How much maths is there?
A-Level Psychology sets a minimum proportion of marks on maths skills. Students calculate averages, use statistical tests and interpret data. A tutor helps with these in an exam context. Practice questions in the exam style help it become routine.
What is the best way to revise the studies?
Learn what each study did, found and its limitations. Using flashcards and practising linking studies to a question works better than rereading notes. Test yourself regularly rather than rereading. Sort studies by topic and practise writing short summaries from memory each week.
Which optional topics will my child study?
It varies by school and board. Tell us the options, and we match a tutor who has taught them, so lessons follow your child’s course. Most schools pick the options early in Year 12. We then tailor lessons to the topics your child’s class is covering at that moment.
