About A-Level Chemistry

A-Level Chemistry is examined at the end of Year 13 and splits into physical, inorganic and organic chemistry. Papers combine short questions, calculations and extended answers, and some questions link all three strands together. Students who keep the three strands in separate boxes often struggle with the synoptic questions at the end of the paper.

The main step up from GCSE is calculation and mechanism. Students use moles, equilibrium constants, enthalpy and rate equations in long, multi-part problems, and draw curly-arrow mechanisms to explain how organic reactions happen. Slips in earlier parts carry forward, so accuracy matters. Questions rarely say which type of reaction is involved, so students must recognise patterns for themselves.

Practical skills are tested in the written papers and through the Practical Endorsement, a pass or fail result from lab work in school that sits alongside the grade. Understanding why each method is used helps students describe it clearly in extended answers. A tutor can revise the theory behind each practical so written questions on it feel familiar.

What we cover

Atomic structure and bonding

Ionisation energies, shapes of molecules and intermolecular forces.

Energetics and kinetics

Enthalpy, Hess’s law, entropy, rate equations and the Arrhenius equation.

Equilibria

Kc, Kp, Le Chatelier’s principle, acids and bases, pH and buffers.

Redox and electrochemistry

Electrode potentials, cells, and transition metal chemistry.

Organic mechanisms

Substitution, addition and elimination, with curly arrows and the products they give.

Organic synthesis and analysis

Multi-step routes, then identifying compounds with NMR, IR and mass spectra.

Practical skills

Titrations, errors, distillation and reflux, and tests for ions.

How a Nerdely A-Level Chemistry tutor helps

Walks through calculations

Each step is written out so students can see where marks are given and where they slip.

Drills mechanisms

Repeated practice of curly arrows and organic routes until they become automatic.

Links the strands

Questions combine physical, organic and inorganic ideas, and lessons show how.

Uses the right papers

Practice comes from your child’s own board, including its style of data and graph questions.

How Nerdely works

  1. Tell us what your child needs

Subject, level, exam board and the times that suit you. It takes a couple of minutes.

  2. We find and interview a tutor

We shortlist tutors who teach that subject and level, interview them ourselves and match the right one.

  3. Lessons are booked in

Live, one-to-one, 50-minute lessons in our online classroom, with video, chat and a shared whiteboard.

  4. You see the progress

Homework, quizzes and weekly test scores in your account, plus a short report every month.

A-Level Chemistry tutoring questions

Is A-Level Chemistry harder than Biology or Physics?

It depends on the student. Chemistry rewards methodical calculation and a good memory for reactions, which suits some more than others. A tutor helps find the habits that work for your child. Choosing a tutor who has taught it well matters more than comparing subject difficulty.

Will tutoring help with organic chemistry?

Yes, and it is one of the most common requests. Organic is about patterns, so a tutor builds a map of reaction types and practises the mechanisms until they come easily. Spectroscopy questions are the natural next step once mechanisms feel secure.

How do I find out which Chemistry course we are on?

Check the exam board and specification letter with school. OCR, for example, has both Chemistry A and Chemistry B (Salters). We ask when we match so the tutor teaches the right one. It makes a real difference to the questions your child will practise.

Can a tutor help with the practical endorsement?

The assessment happens at school, but a tutor can revise the theory, calculations and error analysis behind each practical so your child is well prepared for the written questions on it. This also makes lab work at school more productive.
