About GCSE

GCSEs are taken at the end of Year 11 and graded from 9 (highest) to 1. Most students sit between eight and ten subjects, with English Language, Maths and Science compulsory in England.

Results decide sixth form and college places, and many A-Level courses ask for a 6 or 7 in the subject. A grade 4 in English and Maths is the standard pass; students who miss it usually have to keep studying the subject after 16.

Content is set nationally, but each exam board (AQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas) writes its own papers and mark schemes, so practice should match the board your child is actually sitting.

Why families choose Nerdely for GCSE

Matched to the exam board

We ask which board and tier your child is sitting and match a tutor who teaches it.

Built around mocks and exams

Lessons step up before mocks and the summer series, with past papers and timed practice.

Every tutor interviewed

We talk to each tutor ourselves before they teach, and only match one when we are confident they fit.

Progress you can see

Homework, quizzes and weekly test scores appear in your account, with a short report every month.

GCSE tutoring questions

Which GCSE subjects do you tutor?

Maths, English Language and Literature, Combined Science, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Computer Science, History, Geography, French, Spanish, Religious Studies and Business. If you need a subject not listed, ask us.

When is the best time to start GCSE tutoring?

Year 10 gives the most time to close gaps, but many families start in Year 11, often before mocks. The earlier we find the topics costing marks, the more time there is to fix them.

Can one tutor cover several subjects?

Sometimes, for related subjects such as the sciences. Usually we match a specialist for each subject so your child gets someone who teaches it every week.

How long are GCSE lessons?

Each lesson is 50 minutes, live and one to one in our online classroom. Most students have one lesson a week per subject.
