About GCSE History
GCSE History is untiered, so every student sits the same papers, usually at the end of Year 11 in two or three exams. Each board offers a range of options. Typical papers include a thematic study through time, a period or depth study, a modern world topic and a British depth study with the historic environment.
Schools choose which options to teach, so the content your child needs depends on the school and board. Tutors work from the class syllabus, using the same question styles and mark schemes.
Students often know a great deal and still struggle with how to use it. Source questions ask about utility and reliability, interpretation questions ask for evaluation, and essays ask for a line of argument. The skill is selecting and organising knowledge under time pressure.
Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. Untiered, with options chosen by each school and typically two or three papers.

GCSE History tutoring questions
How much of GCSE History is learning facts?
A fair amount, but facts are not enough. Students are marked on how they select and use knowledge to answer the specific question. A tutor teaches both content and technique.
Which topics will my child’s tutor cover?
Whatever your school teaches. Boards offer many options, and schools choose. Tell us the board and topic titles when you enquire and we will match a tutor who can teach them.
Why does my child write long answers but get low marks?
Often they describe rather than analyse. A tutor shows how to answer the question directly, link evidence to a judgement and manage time across the paper.
Are source questions different from essay questions?
Yes. Source questions test how to judge evidence, and essays test an argument built from knowledge. They need different approaches, and each is practised separately.
When is the best time to start?
Year 10 allows time to learn each topic well, but Year 11 tutoring before mocks is also common. A tutor helps with revision planning for either.
