About GCSE Business

GCSE Business is untiered and is assessed in two written exams at the end of Year 11. The papers are split between topics such as starting and running a business, marketing, operations, human resources and finance, depending on the board.

Questions are set in the context of real or fictional businesses, so students must apply knowledge instead of reciting definitions. Short questions test terms and calculations, and longer questions ask for a justified decision, with evidence from the case study.

The main sticking points are the numbers and the judgement. Break-even, profit, margins and cash flow are needed on every paper, and students often lose marks for stating a view without a reason or an effect on the business.

Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR. Untiered, with two written papers at the end of Year 11.

GCSE Business tutoring questions

Is GCSE Business mostly learning definitions?

Definitions help, but most marks are for applying ideas to a business. A tutor teaches your child to use the case study evidence in every answer.

How much maths is in GCSE Business?

Some, but nothing beyond the GCSE Maths course. Students calculate percentages, profit, break-even and averages, and read data. Regular practice makes them straightforward.

How do I get my child to write better long answers?

Teach a clear pattern: make a point, explain it in the context of the business, weigh up the alternatives and finish with a judgement. A tutor marks practice answers against that pattern.

Which exam board will the tutor teach?

We ask whether your child is sitting AQA, Edexcel or OCR and match a tutor who knows that board, because the paper layouts and question styles differ.

Is it worth starting tutoring in Year 10?

Year 10 gives time to learn the vocabulary and calculations gradually. Year 11 students can also catch up quickly, particularly with focused practice before mocks.
