About GCSE Religious Studies

GCSE Religious Studies is untiered and usually assessed in two written exams at the end of Year 11. Most courses combine the study of two religions, covering their beliefs, teachings and practices, with thematic studies that apply religious and non-religious views to ethical issues.

The religions and themes depend on the school and board. Typical themes include relationships and families, life and death, crime and punishment, and peace and conflict. A tutor works from what your child’s school has chosen.

Answers follow a pattern: short questions on knowledge, then structured responses with reasoned evaluation, often worth up to 12 marks. Students lose marks by describing a belief without explaining it, or by giving one side of an argument instead of weighing both.

Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. Untiered; religions and themes are chosen by each school and the paper structure varies by board.

GCSE Religious Studies tutoring questions

Does my child need to be religious to do well in Religious Studies?

No. The course studies beliefs and ethics from an academic point of view. Students explain what believers think and weigh different views, whatever their own.

Which religions will the tutor cover?

The ones your child’s school teaches. Boards allow different combinations, so tell us the board and religions when you enquire and we will match a tutor who knows them.

How do I help with the 12-mark questions?

These need a clear structure: points for, points against, supporting teachings, and a justified conclusion. A tutor practises the structure until it becomes automatic.

Is it mostly learning quotes and key terms?

Knowledge matters, especially accurate terms and teachings, but marks come from using them. A tutor teaches your child to select the right ones and apply them to the question.

Is Religious Studies a compulsory GCSE?

Schools must teach religious education, but a GCSE is not required for everyone. Many schools enter all students, so check with your child’s school.
