About GCSE Maths
GCSE Maths is sat at the end of Year 11 as three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each: one non-calculator and two calculator papers. Every board covers the same national content, split into number, algebra, ratio and proportion, geometry and measures, probability and statistics.
Students are entered for Foundation tier (grades 1 to 5) or Higher tier (grades 4 to 9). Choosing the right tier matters, and a tutor can help you and the school make that call with real evidence from your child’s work.
Because almost every sixth form and college asks for at least a grade 4, and many A-Level courses ask for a 6 or 7, Maths is the GCSE families most often want support with.
Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas, Foundation and Higher tier.

GCSE Maths tutoring questions
When should my child start GCSE Maths tutoring?
Many families start in Year 10 to build confidence early, but tutoring in Year 11 is just as common, especially in the months before mocks and the summer exams. The sooner gaps are found, the more time there is to close them.
Can a tutor help my child move from Foundation to Higher tier?
Often, yes. A tutor can work on the Higher-only topics and give you a clear picture of whether Higher is realistic, so you can talk to the school with evidence rather than guesswork.
Do your tutors know my child’s exam board?
We ask which board your child is sitting, whether AQA, Edexcel, OCR or Eduqas, and match a tutor who teaches it, so practice papers and mark schemes line up with the real exam.
How long are lessons, and how often?
Each lesson is 50 minutes. Most GCSE students have one lesson a week, and some add a second in the run up to mocks or the summer exams.
How will I know if it is working?
Lessons, homework and weekly test scores all appear in your Nerdely account with notes from the tutor, and you get a short report every month.
