About GCSE Chemistry
GCSE Chemistry is the separate science sat by students taking three science GCSEs. It is assessed at the end of Year 11 in two papers of about an hour and three quarters, with Foundation and Higher tiers. Students move between ideas at the particle level and observations in the lab.
Many students find it a step up from earlier science. Balanced equations, the mole and concentration calculations demand accuracy and a method that works every time, and mistakes in early steps carry through an answer.
Chemistry also asks for precise language. Explaining why ionic compounds conduct only when molten, or why a reaction speeds up, requires specific wording. Required practicals feature in the papers, and a tutor can make sure your child can answer questions on them.

GCSE Chemistry tutoring questions
Why do students find GCSE Chemistry difficult?
It mixes abstract ideas with calculations. A student can understand bonding and still lose marks on moles. A tutor practises both, and builds a method that works under exam pressure.
Can a tutor help with the mole calculations?
Yes. Moles are one of the most common reasons students ask for help. A tutor builds the idea from the ground up, then practises it with progressively harder exam questions.
How many practicals do I need to know?
Boards specify a set of required practicals, such as making salts, titration and chromatography. Questions on the methods, equipment and results appear in the exam, so students should know each one.
Is the periodic table given in the exam?
Yes, a periodic table is provided, but students must know how to use it and understand the trends it shows. A formula sheet is not provided at most boards, so key equations need to be learned.
What is the difference between Foundation and Higher?
Higher papers cover the same course with harder, multi-step questions and more calculations. Foundation questions are more structured. A tutor can show you where your child currently sits.
