About GCSE Geography

GCSE Geography is untiered and is assessed through written exams at the end of Year 11. These generally cover physical geography, human geography, and a paper on applying geographical skills and fieldwork. Some boards also include a decision-making or issue-evaluation task using a resource booklet.

Students must carry out fieldwork, usually one physical and one human investigation, and answer questions about the methods, data and conclusions. Missing a fieldwork day does not mean missing the marks, because a tutor can go through the process with your child.

The subject mixes explanation, data skills and case studies. Many students lose marks by writing general statements without place-specific detail, or by missing the link between a cause and its effect.

Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas. Untiered, with written papers and fieldwork questions; the structure varies by board.

GCSE Geography tutoring questions

How many case studies does my child need?

It depends on the board and the topics studied, but there are usually several per paper. We help your child learn a small number well, with real figures they can use.

Will a tutor help with fieldwork questions?

Yes. Questions ask about the methods, risks, data and conclusions of your child’s own fieldwork. A tutor talks through the process and practises these questions on the day-to-day details.

Is Geography mostly memorising?

No. Students learn information, but marks go to those who apply it. Explaining how and why something happens and using place-specific evidence are what lift answers.

Which topics are most difficult?

It varies, but many students find physical processes, such as river and coastal landforms, and data questions hardest. A tutor starts with a quick check of which topics cost the most marks.

Does Geography involve maths?

A little. Students calculate means, medians, percentages and read graphs. Questions are usually short, and a tutor practises them until they are routine.
