About KS3 Geography

KS3 Geography blends physical geography, such as rivers, weather and tectonics, with human geography, including population, cities, development and resources. The National Curriculum also expects pupils to know the locations of countries, continents and major features around the world.

Fieldwork and skills run through the subject. Pupils read maps and atlases, draw graphs, work with grid references and use geographic information systems (GIS). Questions often ask for a reason or a link, so answers need cause-and-effect thinking rather than a list of facts.

Schools choose their own units, so one pupil may study glaciers and another coasts. What is common is the move from describing to explaining, and this is exactly where GCSE Geography begins. Strong KS3 habits make the GCSE case studies much easier to learn.

KS3 Geography tutoring questions

Is there a lot to memorise in KS3 Geography?

Some, such as locations and key terms. Good tutoring focuses on understanding processes first, then uses simple memory methods for the facts that must be remembered.

Can you help with fieldwork write-ups?

We can help your child understand the method, present results and structure a conclusion. The data and writing must be their own work.

What if my child finds maps and graphs confusing?

We practise one skill at a time with real examples, starting from scale and grid references and working up to reading and drawing graphs.

How does this lead to GCSE Geography?

GCSE mixes physical and human topics with data and fieldwork skills. KS3 builds the vocabulary and habits, so a secure Year 9 pupil starts the course with less to catch up on.
