About KS3 French
KS3 French builds the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing. Pupils start with topics such as family, school, hobbies and town, then move on to past and future tenses, longer sentences and giving opinions with reasons.
Schools differ in how fast they go, and some pupils start French in Year 7 while others have learned it since primary. Gaps appear when pronunciation, verb endings or key vocabulary are not secure, and the next topic then builds on them. A tutor can slow down where needed.
The step to GCSE is big. GCSE French expects wider vocabulary, confident use of tenses and spontaneous speaking. Regular speaking practice and steady vocabulary learning in Years 7 to 9 are what make that step manageable.

KS3 French tutoring questions
My child is shy about speaking. Will that improve?
Often, yes. A private lesson has no audience, so mistakes feel safe. Confidence grows quickly when pupils can try things out and get kind, immediate feedback.
Do your tutors speak French as a first language?
Tutors are matched for their ability to teach French at KS3, and we interview each one ourselves. Tell us if you have a preference, and we will take it into account.
How does KS3 French help at GCSE?
GCSE French tests listening, speaking, reading and writing, with a wide range of vocabulary and tenses. Secure KS3 basics mean your child starts the course ready to build, not catch up.
What if my child has fallen behind?
We start with what they can do, then fill the missing verbs, vocabulary or sounds. A calm restart usually helps more than rushing through the school’s current topic.
