About A-Level French
A-Level French is assessed at the end of Year 13 through listening, reading, translation, writing and a speaking test. Students cover themes such as French-speaking society, artistic culture and political life, along with a film or a literary text, depending on the board. Students are graded A* to E, and each skill is weighted differently by the board.
The jump from GCSE is large. Students need a wide vocabulary, accurate grammar across tenses and the subjunctive, and the ability to discuss ideas in French rather than describe daily life. The speaking test often includes a discussion of an independent research project. A tutor can model natural spoken French and help your child build the habit of speaking.
Translation in both directions is a skill in its own right. It rewards precision, and students who practise it regularly gain marks across the other papers too. Our tutors correct errors gently, so students keep trying more complex language. A tutor can set short weekly translation tasks that build accuracy without taking over your child’s evenings.

A-Level French tutoring questions
How much French will my child speak in lessons?
As much as possible. A tutor speaks French from the first minutes, adjusting pace to your child’s level and moving between conversation, grammar and exam practice. Your child can ask for more English at first, and a tutor will reduce it over time.
What is the independent research project?
Some specifications ask students to research a topic of their choice in a French-speaking context and discuss it in the speaking test. A tutor helps with selection, research and rehearsal. It is worth starting early because research and rehearsal take weeks.
Which film or book will we study?
This depends on the board and school. Tell us the title, and we match a tutor who has taught it so lessons follow your child’s course. The tutor then re-reads the text with your child, so the essay is grounded in detail.
Is A-Level French much harder than GCSE?
Yes, in range and accuracy. Students need to express opinions on abstract topics and write extended pieces. Regular speaking and writing practice from the start of Year 12 makes the jump manageable. Weekly speaking and a short written task go a long way.
