About A-Level Spanish

A-Level Spanish is examined at the end of Year 13 with listening, reading, translation, essay writing and a speaking test. Themes include Hispanic society, culture and political life across Spain and Latin America, plus a film or a literary text on most courses. Students are graded A* to E, and the skills are weighted differently by each board.

Compared with GCSE, students need a wider vocabulary and firmer control of the subjunctive, the preterite and imperfect, and complex sentence structures. They also have to defend an opinion about issues like migration, inequality or regional identity. A tutor can introduce the verb forms gradually and keep practice varied. Regional vocabulary also appears in listening tasks, so wide exposure to different accents is useful.

The speaking exam usually asks students to discuss a topic and sometimes an independent research project. Confidence comes from regular practice with a fluent speaker, which is what one-to-one lessons offer. Our tutors correct errors gently, so students keep trying more complex language. A tutor can also build vocabulary around the themes the exam returns to most often.

A-Level Spanish tutoring questions

Can a tutor help if my child has a Spanish teacher who is not fluent?

Yes. A tutor can offer regular conversation with a fluent speaker, correct habits early and prepare your child for the speaking exam in particular. Your child will still follow the school course, but with extra speaking practice.

What is the hardest part of A-Level Spanish?

Many students find the subjunctive and long translation passages hardest, while others struggle with essay writing. A tutor identifies your child’s weakest area and focuses practice there. Regular little-and-often practice usually beats long sessions. We also recommend short listening tasks between lessons to train the ear.

Does it matter if my child speaks Spanish at home?

Heritage speakers often have fluent speaking, but need work on formal writing, grammar and essay structure. A tutor adapts to this and concentrates on exam technique. Tutors are used to mixed abilities and will plan accordingly.

Which board should we choose?

The school makes this choice. Boards share many themes but vary in papers and set works, so we match a tutor who has taught the one your child is sitting. We ask which board and which set works your child is sitting.
