About A-Level Further Maths
Further Maths is a second A-Level taken alongside Maths, and it is the subject most often suggested for students aiming at maths, physics or engineering at competitive universities. The final exams come at the end of Year 13 and are graded A* to E. Because it is a second maths qualification, it also gives confidence for the quantitative content of first-year degrees.
A compulsory core of further pure maths makes up around half of the course: complex numbers, matrices, proof by induction, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations. The rest depends on the board and the options your school picks, usually from statistics, mechanics and discrete or decision maths. Teachers and tutors can make sure your child covers the same options and stays in step with the class.
Pace is the main difficulty. Many students meet new topics in Year 12 while still settling into Maths, and some schools teach Further Maths in fewer lesson hours than it needs. Extra practice outside lessons often decides whether students keep up. Tutoring lets a student rehearse new ideas at their own pace, then bring questions back to class.
Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR A and OCR MEI.
What we cover
Complex numbers
Argand diagrams, modulus and argument, de Moivre’s theorem and roots of unity.
Matrices
Transformations, determinants, inverses and solving systems of equations.
Proof
Proof by induction for sequences, series, divisibility and matrices.
Further calculus
Volumes of revolution, improper integrals and reduction formulae in some specifications.
Polar and hyperbolic functions
Sketching polar curves, finding areas and working with sinh, cosh and their inverses.
Differential equations
First and second order equations, integrating factors and modelling with them.
Optional modules
Further statistics, further mechanics and discrete or decision maths, depending on your school’s choices.
How a Nerdely A-Level Further Maths tutor helps
Keeps pace with school
Lessons follow the order your teacher uses, then add practice where the course is moving fast.
Builds proof fluency
Induction and algebraic proof need a set-out that examiners can follow, so we rehearse how to write it.
Knows your options
We match a tutor who can teach the option modules your school has chosen, not just the core.
Stretches when ready
Students aiming for A* get harder problems and past papers, including the more demanding unseen questions.

A-Level Further Maths tutoring questions
Do I need A-Level Maths to take Further Maths?
Yes, students take Further Maths alongside A-Level Maths, and the two are designed to be studied together. The first year of Maths gives the algebra and calculus the Further course quickly builds on. A tutor can also revise the Maths content that Further Maths relies on.
Is there an AS in Further Maths?
There is, but it is a separate qualification that does not count towards the A-Level. Some schools enter students at the end of Year 12 to gain exam experience. A tutor can cover AS content or the full course. Tutoring sessions can be scheduled before or after the school exams, depending on your plans.
What options will my child study?
It depends on the board and the school. Many schools pick a mix of statistics, mechanics and discrete maths. We ask which options your child is sitting so the tutor can teach them. The tutor then follows your school’s pace and order of teaching.
Is a tutor useful for students who are doing well?
Often, yes. A tutor can run ahead of the class, work on harder past paper questions and prepare for university applications that require strong Further Maths grades. We can also help with problem-solving practice for admissions tests where a university requires one.
