About A-Level History
A-Level History is built from a breadth study covering a long period, a depth study of a shorter one, and an independent enquiry, usually worth about 20 percent. Papers are taken at the end of Year 13 and mix source questions with essays graded A* to E. Exam questions are written to test judgement, so memorising a narrative is only the first step.
Boards and schools choose different topics, from Tudor England to Russia, Germany or the USA, so what each student studies varies. What stays the same is the skill: answering the question set, arguing a case and weighing evidence, not telling the story. Where possible we match a tutor who has taught your child’s own topics rather than a general historian.
Interpretations questions ask students to judge how historians disagree, and the independent enquiry asks them to research a question of their own choice and write a few thousand words. Both tasks reward wide reading, which a tutor can help organise. Starting the reading early gives students time to form a real view rather than repeat a textbook.

A-Level History tutoring questions
How is A-Level History different from GCSE?
GCSE is mostly about knowing what happened and why. A-Level asks for argument, judgement and evidence from interpretations. Essays are longer and the independent reading is much greater. A tutor can help bridge the gap by modelling a full essay plan on a past question.
What topics will my child study?
It depends on the board and school. Common choices include Tudor England, Russia, Germany, the USA and Britain in the modern period. Tell us what your school teaches and we match a tutor who has taught it.
Can a tutor help with the coursework?
Yes. A tutor can discuss question choices, recommend reading, give feedback on structure and referencing, and help your child manage time. The work itself must be theirs. We encourage students to choose a question they find interesting, because the project is long.
Is History useful for university applications?
Yes. Universities value essay skills, and History is accepted for a wide range of degrees. The subject also pairs well with English, Politics, Economics or languages. Strong essay writing is a transferable skill, whichever degree your child chooses.
