About A-Level Business
A-Level Business is assessed by three exams at the end of Year 13, with no coursework. Papers use short questions, data and case-study extracts, and extended essays, covering marketing, operations, finance, people and strategy. Students are graded A* to E on how well they analyse and judge, as much as on what they remember.
Many questions are set around an unseen business or a pre-released context. Students must apply theory to the details given, not recite definitions, and finish with a justified judgement about what the firm should do. A tutor teaches students to quote the extract, then explain what it means for the firm.
Quantitative skills carry real weight. Break-even, cash flow forecasts, ratio analysis and investment appraisal appear in most papers, and a calculator and clear working are essential. Many marks are lost through poor layout rather than poor understanding. A tutor can run through timed practice so students learn to pace the case-study papers.
Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR.

A-Level Business tutoring questions
Do I need GCSE Business?
It is not usually required. Many students begin A-Level Business without it, and a tutor can build up the basic terms before moving to more demanding analysis. The first weeks of the course cover the basics for everyone.
How hard is the maths?
The maths is mostly GCSE level percentages, ratios and formulae, but applied in multi-step contexts. Practice makes it much easier, and a tutor can focus on whichever calculations cause errors. Using a calculator accurately and showing every step earns method marks.
How do I get better at the 20-mark essays?
Use a clear structure, apply theory to the case, consider both sides and finish with a judgement. A tutor reads practice essays and shows exactly where marks are missed. This is also a useful skill for university essays.
Does the exam board matter?
Yes. Boards differ in paper layout and how they use case studies, so we ask which your child follows and match a tutor with experience of it. We make sure the practice papers match your child’s own course.
