About KS3 History
KS3 History runs in a broad timeline: the Middle Ages, the early modern period, the Industrial era and the 20th century, with a mix of British, local and world history. Schools choose their own topics, so what your child learns can differ from a friend in another school.
The subject is not about memorising dates. Pupils are expected to explain causes and consequences, judge how important events were, compare sources and understand that historians disagree. Written answers need an argument, supported by specific evidence.
Many pupils know the stories but struggle to turn them into structured paragraphs. This is the same skill GCSE History marks most heavily, so Years 8 and 9 are a good time to practise it and see whether history is a subject to continue with.

KS3 History tutoring questions
The topics at my child’s school are different. Is that a problem?
No. We ask what your child is studying and use that. Skills such as explaining causes and using sources matter more than any single topic.
My child hates writing long answers. What helps?
A simple paragraph structure removes much of the fear. Once they have a framework to follow, extended answers become easier and quicker to write.
Does this help with choosing GCSE History?
Yes. Lessons show whether your child enjoys argument, evidence and essay-style work, which is what GCSE History is built on.
Can you help with homework projects?
We can help your child plan and structure projects and give feedback, but the work must be their own. The aim is to teach skills, not to do the task for them.
