About KS3 English
KS3 English asks pupils to read widely, write for different purposes and speak clearly. The National Curriculum includes Shakespeare, pre-1914 literature, fiction and drama from the 20th and 21st centuries, plus a set of grammar and vocabulary skills that schools build on each year.
The big change from primary is that answers now need to explain, not just describe. Pupils must back up a point with evidence from the text and say what the writer is doing. Many children find this hard at first, and it is the habit that GCSE English Literature rewards most.
Writing is the other pressure point. Spelling, punctuation and paragraphing need to be secure, and pupils begin to plan longer pieces, from descriptions and stories to speeches and arguments. These are the same skills GCSE English Language tests.

KS3 English tutoring questions
My child reads a lot but writes weak answers. Why?
Reading for pleasure is a great start, but exam-style answers need a different skill: choosing evidence and explaining it. A tutor can teach this step by step using the texts your child is studying.
Will you help with the class novel or play?
Yes. Tell us what your child is reading, and the tutor will use it. Understanding the text and writing about it are the main skills at this level.
What if my child struggles with spelling and punctuation?
We can work on these in short, regular practice, using the child’s own writing. Small, consistent habits make more difference than long lists of rules.
How does KS3 English lead into GCSE?
GCSE has English Language and English Literature. KS3 builds the reading, writing and analysis skills for both, so a confident Year 9 pupil starts GCSE with a real head start.
