How we teach English
In primary school, English is about secure foundations: spelling, grammar, handwriting and reading with understanding. For 11+ it adds comprehension and writing under time pressure, and at Key Stage 3 pupils start to explain how writers create effects, not just what happens.
GCSE splits into English Language and English Literature. Language rewards clear reading of unseen texts and controlled, purposeful writing. Literature asks for a personal, well-supported argument about set texts. At A-Level, students read more widely, write longer essays and bring in context and critical views.
Our tutors work on the page with your child: planning paragraphs, tightening sentences and marking a response against the exam board’s own criteria. Homework, short quizzes and a weekly test keep the practice going between lessons.

English tutoring questions
What levels of English do you cover?
Primary English, 11+ English, Key Stage 3, GCSE English Language, GCSE English Literature, and A-Level English Literature and Language.
Is there a difference between English Language and English Literature tutoring?
Yes. Language focuses on reading unseen texts and writing for different purposes. Literature focuses on set texts, quotations and building an argument. Many students need both, and a tutor can cover each.
Can a tutor help with creative and essay writing?
Yes. Tutors help children plan, draft and edit their own writing, giving specific feedback on structure, vocabulary and punctuation rather than just a mark.
Will the tutor know our set texts?
We match tutors to your child’s exam board, and you can tell us which texts the school is studying so we can find a tutor who knows them.
My child reads well but writes badly. Can you help?
Yes. Writing is a skill that responds to practice and clear feedback. A tutor can work on planning, sentence variety and accuracy in short, regular steps.
