About Primary Maths

Primary Maths follows the National Curriculum. In KS1, children learn place value, number bonds, simple addition and subtraction, and early multiplication, division and fractions. In KS2 the work grows to long multiplication, short and long division, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio and early algebra.

Two checkpoints matter. The Year 4 multiplication tables check asks children to recall all tables up to 12 x 12 quickly, so fluency counts. In Year 6, the KS2 SATs include an arithmetic paper and two reasoning papers, where children must explain their thinking, not just calculate.

Maths is also where gaps show up early. A child who is unsure about place value in Year 3 often struggles with fractions in Year 5. A tutor can go back to the missing step without the embarrassment of a full classroom.

Primary Maths tutoring questions

How can a tutor help with times tables?

By making practice short, regular and varied. Your child works on the tables they find hardest, using patterns, games and timed recall, which is the skill the Year 4 multiplication tables check measures.

When should we start SATs preparation?

Most families begin in Year 5 or early Year 6. That leaves time to fix gaps in fractions, long division and reasoning before the tests in May.

My child says they hate maths. Can tutoring help?

Often, yes. Dislike usually comes from one confusing topic that was missed. A tutor goes back to it calmly, one to one, and success on small steps brings confidence back.

Is the lesson just more homework?

No. Lessons are live and interactive, using a shared whiteboard to draw, count and solve problems together. A little homework is set to keep skills fresh, but lessons are about understanding.

Can tutoring help my child who is ahead?

Yes. Tutors can stretch confident children with problem solving and the next year’s topics, which also helps if they are thinking about 11+ or scholarship papers.
