About GCSE Spanish

GCSE Spanish tests listening, speaking, reading and writing, each worth a quarter of the grade. Most students sit all four at the end of Year 11, at Foundation or Higher tier. Spanish is popular because pronunciation is regular, but exam success depends on accurate verbs and a wide vocabulary.

The revised specifications examined from 2026 use a defined vocabulary list and grammar set across the boards. Students need to learn this vocabulary thoroughly, because it underpins every paper and the translation tasks.

Common sticking points include ser and estar, preterite and imperfect, and the subjunctive at higher levels. In speaking, students need to respond to unexpected questions rather than recite a memorised answer, and that comes from regular conversation.

Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas, Foundation and Higher tier, with listening, speaking, reading and writing each worth 25%.

GCSE Spanish tutoring questions

Is GCSE Spanish easier than French?

Many students find Spanish pronunciation easier, but the exams are of a similar standard. Verb forms, vocabulary and fluent speaking take time in both, so grades depend on regular practice.

How is the speaking exam structured?

It usually has a role-play, a photo-based task and a general conversation, though details vary by board. A tutor practises each part and helps your child respond naturally to follow-up questions.

Can a tutor help with listening?

Yes. Listening improves with exposure to different voices, speeds and question types. A tutor uses past-paper style recordings and teaches strategies for predicting answers and spotting traps.

Which tier will my child take?

The school decides, and in most cases the whole qualification is sat at one tier. A tutor can give you a realistic view of whether Higher is within reach.

How often should my child have lessons?

One 50-minute lesson a week suits most students. Some add a second in the weeks before the speaking exam or mocks.
