About GCSE Physics

GCSE Physics is the separate science for students taking three science GCSEs. It is assessed at the end of Year 11 in two papers of around an hour and three quarters, with Foundation and Higher tiers. The course runs from energy and forces to waves, electricity and space.

Physics leans on maths more than the other sciences. Students must rearrange equations, convert units, read graphs and handle standard form. Some boards give an equation sheet in the exam, while others expect certain equations to be recalled, so it helps to know the board.

Required practicals are assessed in the written papers, including methods, graphs and sources of error. The hardest marks usually go to students who can explain a concept in words, not just plug numbers into a formula.

What we cover

Energy

Energy stores and transfers, efficiency, power and the national grid.

Electricity

Series and parallel circuits, resistance, power and mains electricity.

Particle model of matter

Density, changes of state, specific heat capacity and specific latent heat.

Atomic structure and radiation

Radioactive decay, half-life, uses and risks of radiation.

Forces

Resultant forces, Newton’s laws, momentum, moments and pressure.

Waves

Wave properties, sound, light, the electromagnetic spectrum and refraction.

Magnetism and space

Magnetic fields, electromagnets and motors, and the life cycle of stars.

How a Nerdely GCSE Physics tutor helps

Builds confidence with equations

Choosing, rearranging and using formulae, with units and standard form handled carefully.

Explains the idea first

Understanding what a force or a wave is doing before reaching for a formula.

Covers practical skills

Planning, graphs, uncertainty and conclusions for each required practical.

Shows progress clearly

Quizzes, homework and a short weekly test, with results and tutor notes in your account.

How Nerdely works

  1. Tell us what your child needs

Subject, level, exam board and the times that suit you. It takes a couple of minutes.

  2. We find and interview a tutor

We shortlist tutors who teach that subject and level, interview them ourselves and match the right one.

  3. Lessons are booked in

Live, one-to-one, 50-minute lessons in our online classroom, with video, chat and a shared whiteboard.

  4. You see the progress

Homework, quizzes and weekly test scores in your account, plus a short report every month.

GCSE Physics tutoring questions

Is GCSE Physics all maths?

Not all, but maths matters. Many questions are calculations, and others test explanations in words. A tutor works on both so your child is not caught out by either type.

Will the equations be given in the exam?

It depends on the board. Some give an equation sheet, while others expect certain formulae to be learned. We match a tutor who knows your board and teaches which equations to memorise.

Why does my child understand the lesson but lose marks?

Common reasons are unit errors, skipping working, or giving a description when the question asks for an explanation. A tutor trains these habits using exam-style questions and mark schemes.

Do tutors cover required practicals?

Yes. Exams ask about variables, methods, results and evaluation from the practicals, so a tutor goes through each one and checks your child can answer written questions on them.

Is Higher tier realistic for my child?

A tutor can check how your child copes with Higher-style questions and give you evidence. That helps you and the school decide, and lessons then focus on the right topics.
