About GCSE Biology

GCSE Biology is the separate science sat by students aiming for three science GCSEs. It is assessed at the end of Year 11 in two papers of around an hour and three quarters, split roughly between the topics. It is tiered into Foundation and Higher papers.

Content ranges from cells and body systems to ecology and genetics. Students need to know specific vocabulary, but the harder marks go to those who can apply ideas to a new experiment, a data table or a graph they have not seen.

Required practicals are assessed in the written papers, along with maths skills such as magnification, rates and percentages. Longer answers, often worth six marks, ask students to link several ideas in a logical order.

Exam boardsAQA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC Eduqas, Foundation and Higher tier, two written papers at the end of Year 11.

What we cover

Cell biology

Microscopy, cell division, stem cells and transport across membranes.

Organisation

Digestion, enzymes, the circulatory and breathing systems, and non-communicable disease.

Infection and response

Pathogens, white blood cells, vaccines, antibiotics and drug testing.

Bioenergetics

Photosynthesis and respiration, including limiting factors and investigating them.

Homeostasis and response

The nervous system, hormones, blood glucose control and reproduction.

Inheritance, variation and evolution

DNA, genetic crosses, selective breeding and natural selection.

Ecology

Food webs, biodiversity, the carbon cycle and human impact on ecosystems.

How a Nerdely GCSE Biology tutor helps

Connects the topics

Showing how respiration, enzymes and the circulatory system link, so answers hold together.

Practises six-mark answers

Planning and writing extended responses that are accurate, logical and complete.

Handles data and practicals

Reading graphs, spotting variables and explaining required practical methods and results.

Checks understanding every week

A quick quiz and a short weekly test, with scores and notes you can see in your account.

GCSE Biology tutoring questions

Is separate Biology harder than Combined Science?

It covers more content and goes deeper, so there is more to learn. Students who enjoy the subject often find it manageable, but the extra volume can overwhelm them without a good revision routine.

How can my child remember all the key terms?

A tutor builds understanding first, then adds recall techniques such as flashcards, diagrams and quizzing. Terms that are used in context stay in memory far better than lists.

What are required practicals?

They are experiments set by the specification, such as investigating enzyme activity or osmosis in potato. Exams include questions on method, results and evaluation, so students need to understand them even if they did not carry them out in class.

Does Biology involve much maths?

Some. Students calculate magnification, percentage change, rates and means, and interpret graphs. A tutor practises these skills with exam-style questions so they feel routine.

Can a tutor help with the Higher tier?

Yes. Higher papers use longer, less structured questions and more demanding applications. Tutors focus on the explanations and unfamiliar contexts that decide grades 7 to 9.
